Kavya Mohanram is a naturalist who is primarily a portrait artist. She explores many different mediums of art: oil paint, acrylic paint, pencil, colored pencil, and mixed media. Her primary focus is to highlight individuals who are underrepresented in art to bring them to light. She focuses on attention to detail and highlighting the parts of an individual that make a person unique.
Kavya is inspired by Kehinde Wiley, as he places people of color into traditional forms of art and settings, where there was previously no representation. She is a Christian by faith and appreciates the raw appreciation of the creation of God, which is important to her.
There have been dark moments and continue to be dark moments in the artist’s life, and sometimes it feels like nothing matters and everything is dull. Then, someone will smile, and it will feel surreal and like the world is beautiful again. Kavya wants people to experience that moment when they observe her photos.
She has been currently focused on developing her oil painting abilities. She is working on a portrait of her brother, which completes the collection of depictions of her nuclear family. Her favorite piece has been a drawing of her partner, Cay. She hopes to continue to bring light to people of color to further bring them into the spotlight of the visual arts.
